Headaches & Migraines

Headaches: Types, causes and how we can help

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. While many headaches can be occasional and manageable, others are chronic, debilitating, and complex, requiring a deeper understanding and targeted care.

Types of headaches

1. Migraines

Migraines are a type of headache often characterized by intense, throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. They can be accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, light and sound sensitivity, visual disturbances and even dizziness/vertigo, known as auras. Migraines are believed to result from neurological and vascular changes in the brain and are often triggered by stress, hormonal fluctuations, diet, or environmental factors.

2. Cervicogenic Headaches

These headaches originate from issues in the neck, such as joint dysfunction, muscle tension, or poor posture. The pain typically starts at the base of the skull and radiates to the front of the head. Cervicogenic headaches can mimic migraine symptoms, making proper diagnosis and treatment essential.

3. Post-Traumatic Headaches

Post-traumatic headaches can develop after a head or neck injury, such as a concussion or whiplash. They may present as tension-type headaches or migraines and are often linked to neck stiffness, muscle tension, or inflammation. These headaches can persist for weeks or even months after the initial injury, significantly affecting quality of life.

4. TMJ-Related Headaches

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull, and dysfunction in this area can lead to headaches. TMJ-related headaches are often accompanied by jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, and difficulty chewing. They are typically caused by jaw misalignment, teeth grinding, or stress-related muscle tension.

How we help manage and treat headaches

At our clinic, we understand that headaches are rarely “one-size-fits-all.” We take a holistic and personalized approach to understand your headache patterns, triggers, and underlying causes. Here’s how we can help:

Comprehensive assessment

We begin with a thorough evaluation to identify the type of headache you’re experiencing and the contributing factors. This may include assessing your posture, neck mobility, TMJ and oculomotor function, neurological exam and lifestyle habits.

Targeted treatment plans

  • Spinal Adjustments: For cervicogenic and post-traumatic headaches, gentle adjustments to the neck and upper spine can restore proper joint function, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate nerve irritation.

  • Soft Tissue Therapy: Techniques like myofascial release, massage, and trigger point therapy can help relieve tension in the neck, shoulders, and jaw, addressing muscle-related headache triggers.

  • TMJ Therapy: For TMJ-related headaches, we use a combination of manual therapy, exercises, and lifestyle recommendations to reduce pain and improve joint function.

  • Advanced Therapies: We incorporate innovative treatments such as dry needling, low-level laser therapy, and shockwave therapy to target chronic pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

  • Rehabilitation Exercises: Tailored exercises strengthen and stabilize the neck, shoulders, and jaw, reducing the likelihood of recurrent headaches.

  • Lifestyle and Stress Management: We work with you to identify and address headache triggers, such as poor posture, stress, or sleep disturbances. Personalized advice on ergonomics, relaxation techniques, and dietary modifications can make a significant difference.

Headaches can feel overwhelming, but they don’t have to control your life. By addressing the underlying causes and providing personalized care, we aim to reduce the frequency and intensity of your headaches and help you regain your well-being.
